Solid wood, and decent quality, but assembly requires someone who is mechanically inclined with some decent tools. These bunk beds are solid wood and seem to be of pretty good quality. However, if you are going to assemble them yourself make sure you plan on spending at least 4-5 hours doing so, and that you have some quality tools. The Allen wrenches included with the hardware kit are junk and there is so much paint on the screw heads you’ll be glad they gave you extras because you will probably strip at least one Allen head. The only other issue I had was that the hole on one rail was not drilled…
